在PLC、過程控制、數(shù)據(jù)采集以及控制系統(tǒng)中，各種傳感器產(chǎn)生的數(shù)字信號都傳送到一個中央控制器，進行處理和分析。為了保證用戶接口端電壓的安全性，也為了防止瞬態(tài)尖峰的傳輸，需要實現(xiàn)電流隔離。最常用的隔離器件是光耦器、基于變壓器的隔離器和電容耦合式隔離器。

通用的光耦器利用發(fā)光二極管(LED)來將電氣信號轉(zhuǎn)換成對應(yīng)的光強度，并用光電探測器將光信號轉(zhuǎn)換成電信號。一般說來，它們的LED普遍存在轉(zhuǎn)換效率低的問題，而且光電探測器的響應(yīng)速度較慢;光耦隔離器的壽命有限，隨著溫度、工作速度和功耗的變化而會出現(xiàn)過大的性能波動。它們一般局限于1或2通道結(jié)構(gòu)，需要外接元件才能實現(xiàn)完整的功能。

ADI目前開發(fā)出一種新的隔離方法，它將芯片級的變壓器技術(shù)與集成化的CMOS輸入與輸出電路結(jié)合起來。這些iCoupler器件在尺寸、成本和功耗方面都低于光耦隔離器，同時，有多種多樣的通道配置和性能水平，并帶有標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的CMOS接口，且無需外接元件——且能在全溫度、電源范圍和壽命期中保持其高性能和穩(wěn)定性。iCoupler的數(shù)據(jù)率和定時精度比常見的高速光耦合器高2～4倍，而它們用的功耗僅為光耦合器的1/50，發(fā)熱更小，而可靠性得以提高，成本則更低。

在完全隔離的系統(tǒng)中，從系統(tǒng)端向現(xiàn)場端提供隔離的電源是另一個要面對的挑戰(zhàn)，而在這一方面目前也涌現(xiàn)了新的解決方案。傳統(tǒng)上，將電源從隔離的一端傳遞到另一端所用的技術(shù)包括使用單獨的、尺寸較大的、昂貴的DC/DC變換器，或者設(shè)計及接口困難的分立器件。目前出現(xiàn)的一種更新和更好的方法是采用完整的、全部集成化的隔離解決方案，這種方案可以通過微變壓器實現(xiàn)跨越隔離點的信號和電源傳輸，其供電能力高達50mW。單個ADuM524x isoPower系列產(chǎn)品元件可以提供高達5kV的信號和電源隔離度，這避免了采用分立的、隔離的電源的必要，顯著的降低了總的隔離系統(tǒng)的成本、電路板面積和設(shè)計時間。所有isoPower產(chǎn)品都已經(jīng)實現(xiàn)了UL、CSA和VDE安全性認(rèn)證。
